TikTok, which caused a revolution in social media platforms with the features it offers, announced that it will bring a brand new feature to its application. This feature will allow users to watch content from certain topics with a new stream.
The new stream will be called ‘STEM’. This streaming page will only feature content from science, technology, engineering, and math. The company says the new feature will come to users in the US starting in the coming weeks. There is no word yet on when it will be released on a large scale.
Content to be included in the STEM stream will undergo strict controls
The STEM stream will be added alongside the two streams already in the app. In other words, there will be a “STEM” section next to the flow pages that we see as “For You” and “Following” at the top of the screen.
The China-based platform says that the videos in this section will undergo strict inspections and that not every science and technology video can be included here. This type of content will be reviewed by organizations that are TikTok’s partners and focus on security. Those who pass these reviews will also be able to take part in the new stream.
For example, TikTok states that Common Sense Networks, a company that is one of its partners and aims to ensure that the content is safe and appropriate for age groups, will review the videos, and the research organization Poynter will check whether the information in the videos is reliable. In this way, it is aimed to prevent disinformation. The platform has been harshly criticized lately for its inaccurate content.
This move by TikTok came after it was revealed that it was testing topic-oriented video streams such as fashion, sports and games in the past months. The company announced today that it is testing streams that focus on different topics in certain markets. This means that we will see similar feed pages from different categories in the app soon.
