YouTube, where thousands of new videos are uploaded every second, can inevitably host information pollution. Of course, this pollution can lead to great misconceptions, especially in terms of health issues. The platform announced an important innovation to prevent this.
YouTube will now ensure that healthcare professionals and information providers who produce certain categories of content are seen as the main source. Content shared by approved people will be available on YouTube under the heading ‘From health sources’.
This is what the new feature will look like on YouTube:
When you do a search on health topics with the innovation on YouTube, there will be a section under the heading ‘Health resources’ in the results. This section will list content related to your search, produced by healthcare professionals.
So, how will it be understood that a content is produced by a healthcare professional?
Content that will fall under the heading ‘Health sources’ on YouTube will only include sources approved by YouTube. Healthcare professionals and information providers will apply to YouTube with their license from a medical school to become approved resources.
There will also be some conditions for these contents:
Certain conditions will also be sought in the content produced by the sources. These content will need to follow health information sharing best practices set by the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, the National Academy of Medicine, and the World Health Organization.
Applications for YouTube’s new feature are available in the US from October 27. However, it has not been shared yet when the feature will be available in other countries.
