Two Russian cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev and Denis Matveev went on a spacewalk outside the International Space Station to activate a new robotic arm. The cosmonauts’ mission has been going on for about six hours. The spacewalk is broadcast live on NASA’s website, and video of the event was shared on the International Space Station’s official Twitter account.
During the spacewalk, Russian cosmonauts installed and connected a control panel for the 11.3-metre-long robotic arm, then removed the arm’s protective covers and attached a handrail to the outside of the Nauka module. Continuing their studies, the cosmonauts are about to complete their work.

This robotic arm, which is the mission of cosmonauts, will be used to assist other astronauts and cosmonauts and to carry any items that need to be transported outside the Russian segment of the space station in the future. This mission was the fourth spacewalk outside the space station and the 249th overall for the assembly, maintenance, and upgrade of the orbiting lab.
The same cosmonauts will go on another spacewalk on April 28, this time removing the thermal blankets used to protect the robotic arm. Matveev and Artemyev will also flex the robotic arm’s joints, release constraints and test its gripper capability.
