South Korea announced earlier this week that it plans to launch its own sixth generation (6G) network in 2028. As part of its K-Network 2030 plan, South Korea seeks to secure “premium” 6G technologies, develop a “software-based next-generation mobile network” and strengthen its network supply chain.

South Korea to switch to 6G in five years

In addition, South Korea will provide incentives to local companies in the country to develop 6G technology. These incentives will be offered in the production of equipment, parts and materials. An open radio access network will also be developed, which is compatible with any device and enables mobile operators and businesses to offer flexible services.

To make all this possible, South Korea is conducting a feasibility study for its research and development project on key 6G technologies. The value of this project was stated by the state as 482 million dollars. South Korea’s early and rapid focus on this 6G technology is to have a say in future wireless frequencies.

The project also aims to help the country maintain its position in the global competition for future network infrastructure. In a report by IPlytics, it is stated that the development of 4G technology is mostly dominated by US and European companies, but South Korean companies lead the way in 5G.

Moreover, South Korea accounted for 25.9 percent of the number of 5G patents received last year. It is aimed that this share will increase to 30 percent or more in 6G. Alongside South Korea, India aims to launch 6G services before the end of this decade.
