The voice actors criticized the use of artificial intelligence as an “exploitative” technology during the Comic-Con panel. SAG-AFTRA and members of the National Voice Actors Association met to discuss how artificial intelligence can threaten creativity. To support the strike of film and TV actors who were unable to attend San Diego Comic-Con, a number of voice actors came together to raise awareness about the threat of artificial intelligence to the industries.

Artificial intelligence can imitate sound artists

You are currently viewing videos on social media called “AI Covers”. While these may seem like fun content for now, things are much darker in the professional world. At the Comic-Con panel, different ways of using artificial intelligence in sound studies were examined in depth. Nearly all panelists warned that AI is not an inherently bad tool and can improve audio performance in some ways, but that fans and gamers should oppose exploitative methods.

Speaking at the panel, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, executive director of SAG-AFTRA, said that artificial intelligence can be used to strengthen voice actors as well as to play their voices, and caution should be exercised in this regard. There is currently no federal or international regulation, and most existing contracts say companies have the authority to use the actor’s voice or AI version forever. To protect voice actors and their fans, NAVA and SAG-AFTRA are calling for more protective contract language and work for global laws.

Experts state that voice actors should be especially sensitive to their voices being stolen and used in inappropriate content. Because currently, anyone can create the content they want with a sound sample they find on the internet. Aside from the fact that this is almost impossible to detect, experts advise that the community should not let them “slip” and report it. In addition, it is pointed out that artificial intelligence may have consequences not only in the field of voice acting, but also in other professions.
