Currently Sony’s largest image sensor for smartphones, the 1-inch IMX989 sensor has been featured in many camera-focused phones. Size isn’t everything, however, and according to unofficial reports Sony’s next two new sensors will be slightly smaller, but will make up for the size gap with clever designs.

New sensors are coming from Sony

As stated, the Sony IMX903 will be a 1/1.14″ sensor with 48MP resolution and 1.4µm pixels (compared to 1.6µm in IMX989). It will support dual pixel autofocus, so each pixel will consist of two photo diodes, each 0.7 x 1.4µm in size. This sensor will also have Dolby signature Wide Dynamic Range technology, thus capable of shooting video at high frame rates beyond all of these, Cinema IMX90 4K Mode. For instant phones, this sensor looks like it will be a strong choice.

The Sony IMX907, on the other hand, is roughly the same size as 1/1.12″ but has a slightly higher 50MP resolution. The pixel dimensions are retained in this sensor at 1.4µm, but the quad pixels are split into four photo diodes (0.7 x 0.7µm) each for autofocus.

Typically, dual-pixel AF sensors can output images up to twice their native resolution. Therefore, phone manufacturers can use IMX903 in 96MP mode and IMX907 in 200MP mode if they wish. This means Sony has for the first time in a long time matched Samsung’s best sensor in terms of resolution. Finally, it is unclear exactly when these new sensors will be released or on which phone model they will be used.
