Sony is preparing to introduce the new generation of virtual reality glasses, which it first launched in 2016. The PlayStation VR2 model, developed to increase the PlayStation 5 experience and add more realism, creates quite a stir. However, according to today’s news, PlayStation VR2 will not be compatible with original PSVR games.
PlayStation VR2 with all the advanced features
Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience, spoke today on PlayStation’s official podcast. It clearly said in its description that there will be no backwards compatibility for PSVR games in PSVR 2. This indicates that PlayStation VR2 will not work with original PlayStation VR games.
Nishino explains: “PSVR games are not compatible with PSVR 2 because PSVR 2 is truly designed to deliver a next-gen VR experience.” In addition, the vice president continued his speech. “PSVR 2 has all the advanced features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, inside-out tracking, 3D audio. This means that developing PSVR 2 requires a completely different approach than the original PSVR.”
According to the statement, there does not seem to be a technical reason why PSVR games are not PSVR 2 compatible. Announced in 2021, backward compatibility for PSVR 2 was a question Sony had avoided answering until now. There is currently no official event date for PlayStation VR2. However, it is claimed that it will arrive in 2023.
In addition, SIE President Jim Ryan also made a statement on the subject. “Significant amounts of money are currently being spent on partnerships with independent and third-party developers to secure a significant pipeline of compelling VR content at PlayStation VR2’s event.”
Sony made various statements during its CES 2022 keynote in January. He first shared the official technical specifications of the PlayStation 5 VR headset. It also confirmed the name of the VR controller: PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.
