Sony is starting to test support for 1440p resolution, a highly requested feature for the PlayStation 5 console. As of today, testers have access to a new PS5 system software beta, which includes 1440p support, curated playlists for their library, and new social features.
The new 1440p video output option will allow PS5 owners to select this resolution on compatible TVs and monitors. If games support 1440p, native 1440p display will be supported, but if not, 4K games will be downscaled to 1440p output with supersampling, benefiting from anti-aliasing improvements.
PS5 owners who have access to the beta software can check whether their HDMI-connected displays support 1440p in the display and video section of the PS5 panel. Sony also warned that Variable Refresh Rate will not be supported at 1440p and will only work in 1080p and 4K on PS5.
hello to game lists
This new PS5 software update also includes game lists designed to make it easy to organize your games. You can now create game lists from your main game library, each supporting up to 100 games. There is a total list limit of 15 games and all disc, digital and streaming games can be added to the lists. You can basically think of these lists as folders into which you can add multiple games.
Additionally, Sony is adding new social features, including the option to ask your friends to start sharing their screens, and new notifications to let you know when you can join a friend’s game in progress when you join a party. You’ll be able to send stickers and voice messages at parties and easily compare the difference between 3D sound and normal stereo before choosing your preferred setting.
Sony started testing this new PS5 software with beta testers today and it will likely be available to all PS5 owners in the coming months.
