Sony, Samsung and Omnivision are among the world’s leading camera sensor manufacturers. The company has announced a promising innovation that is ahead of smartphone photography. Japanese firm Sony introduced what it calls the world’s first stacked CMOS image sensor with 2-Layer Transistor Pixel.
Sony released an image describing the new camera technology
Sony has released an image explaining what has changed compared to traditional sensors. The company states that this solution doubles the saturation signal level of a sensor. He explained that this results in wider dynamic ranges because of this. The firm added that moving the pixel transistors to a separate substrate frees up space to increase the size of the amp transistors.
Expected to be useful for low light photography
The company notes that larger amp transistors result in noticeably reduced noise, which should be beneficial for low-light photography. The firm added that this technology allows a sensor’s pixels to maintain and improve their current performance, even at smaller pixel sizes.
Sony thinks this technology could act as a key to higher resolution smartphone cameras with smaller pixels. Therefore, it is thought that the company will provide an important convenience to follow Samsung and offer 108 Megapixel or 200 Megapixel cameras.
Sony has confirmed that this technology is aimed at smartphones. However, he has not yet given time about when these sensors will be on the market.
