In Sony’s PlayStation Showcase livestream, the company confirmed rumors that it is working on a new handheld device. However, it looks like this device will be closer to devices like Logitech G Cloud and Razer Edge that focus on game streaming rather than being a sequel to PlayStation Vita from 2011.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan has offered a first look at the device, which has yet to be officially named but is known internally as Project Q. Details on the capabilities, specs and performance of this handset are unknown, but Ryan has confirmed that it will feature a massive eight-inch HD display sandwiched between two parts that appear to be a split PlayStation 5 controller. More importantly, it will have all the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller.

Project Q won’t be a next-gen version of the PS Vita, nor is it even a standalone portable console designed to compete with the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. Instead, it will be a handheld device specifically designed to be used for PS Remote Play over a wifi connection and will require games (excluding VR games) to be installed on the PS5.

Sony hasn’t shared any details on the Project Q’s price either, but since it’s designed as an accessory for the PS5, it’s likely to be much cheaper than other portable game streaming devices. Sony has said that more details on Project Q will be announced in the near future, and the device is expected to launch later this year.
