Sony phones will continue to be around
Sony has a multi-year deal with Qualcomm to use Snapdragon platforms to power its phones. The agreement is an extension of the existing agreement between the two parties, while Qualcomm chipsets will be used in high-end and mid-range smartphones as well as Sony’s upcoming premium devices. This deal also signals that Sony will be present in the smartphone market for at least a few more years.
Sony unveiled the oddly named Xperia 1 V last month. The smartphone runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform and is more of a device for photographers and vloggers. While these are relatively niche uses, Sony uses camera technology to help users capture high-quality photos and videos. Xperia 1 V can be used as a monitor for compatible Sony Alpha cameras. Xperia 1 V starts at $1400.
The company also showed off the mid-range Xperia 10 V for the first time in May. The device has Snapdragon 695 chipset and 60Hz, 1080p OLED display. Sony started selling the phone in Europe this month for €449, or around $500.
