The new 48MP MX803 sensor and even the selfie camera on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max belong to Sony. This information came from Apple CEO Tim Cook himself. Cook said it’s the first time Apple has used Sony camera sensors in iPhones in over a decade.
Sony earned $6 more per unit in the second quarter of 2022, generating a total revenue of $300 million. Camera sensors account for 54% of the company’s total revenue for 2022, an increase of 5% compared to 2021.
Samsung followed Sony. The company did well in 2022 in terms of global smartphone image sensor revenue. Revenue share fell 1% points to 29%, but is still in a good position. Affordable 50MP sensors have received a lot of attention, and the company is estimated to ship 200 million units in 2022. These sensors are used in the main cameras of low-end phones and the front cameras of higher-end devices. The company continues to lead the 100+ megapixel sensor market.
It is seen that the smartphone market has shrunk by 6% in 2022 compared to 2021, but over 13 billion dollars has been generated. Sony and Samsung account for 83% of total market revenue.
