Sony officially launched PS VR2, a virtual reality (VR) headset for the PlayStation 5 game console, on February 22, priced at $549.99. But a few weeks later, research firm IDC announced that sales of the title fell far short of what was expected. Now Sony has responded by saying that sales in the first few weeks surpassed those of the original PS VR headset.
IDC claims that between the start of sales and the end of March, Sony will have sold only 270,000 PS VR2s. However, in Sony’s new financial presentation of the entire PlayStation business, the division showed a sales chart that paints a very different picture.
This chart showed the first six weeks of sales of PS VR 2 compared to the first six weeks of the original PS VR title. While Sony doesn’t provide exact sales figures, the chart shows that the PS VR2 has sold around 600,000 units in the first six weeks since its launch, 8 percent higher than PS VR sales in the same period.
It also calls into question the methods IDC uses to forecast sales of Sony’s next-generation VR headset. The research firm has not yet released a statement about Sony’s sales numbers.
Aside from this data that goes against IDC’s numbers, a lot of interesting data was also presented throughout the PlayStation presentation. For example, sales and revenue of Sony’s PS5 console are likely to exceed the sales of the old PS4 by the end of the company’s fiscal 2023. Also, sales of PC versions of older PlayStation games appear to have grown to $450 million at the end of fiscal 2023.
