Nowadays, when we say goodbye to fossil fuels, the use of solar panels is becoming more and more common. These solar fields, which provide a significant amount of energy, unfortunately cannot show the desired efficiency on cloudy days. But what if the cloud problem disappeared?
2 gigawatts of energy production is targeted
China has started a new study to eliminate the decrease in the efficiency of solar rays due to cloud and atmosphere. The far eastern country has revealed its plan to build a solar power plant in space. This idea, which has been thought about for years, may soon become a reality.
Chinese scientists and engineers continue to work on a solar power plant that can send energy stored in space to Earth. It is claimed that such a power plant can produce 6 times more energy than the derivative installed in the world.
Aiming to start using the first solar energy transmission technology in 2030, China plans to start the trials of the project in space in 2028. Accordingly, solar energy will be transformed into lasers or microwaves and transferred to the world.
The facility, whose tests are planned to start soon, is planned to produce only 10 kW of energy in the first stage. If the tests are successful, experts will increase the capacity and work on larger scales. Later, this system is planned to be transported into space to obtain energy efficiently.
Of course, this project also has certain difficulties. The first problem is the cooling of the basic components of this system, which will transmit with microwaves or lasers. In addition, a large number of vehicles will have to be sent into space for such a large structure.
It is also of great importance that these high-frequency rays are efficient in all weather conditions. The space junk, which is now surrounding the world, may also confront Chinese scientists as another problem. The solar field to be created in space will need to be protected from this dump and other celestial bodies.
Will produce more energy than nuclear power plant
China aims to build a full-scale solar power plant in four stages. Researchers will start working on a more powerful version after installing this system in 2030. The new solar field, which is planned to be implemented in 2035, is planned to provide 10 MW of energy for military and civilian use.
If everything goes as planned, the solar plant placed in space will be able to provide 2 gigawatts of energy in 2050. Let us remind you that this value is approximately twice the amount produced by a nuclear power plant.
Other countries have been planning on this idea for many years as well, including the US, Japan, UK, India and Russia. China has been actively working on the idea of space-based solar power plants for the past few years.
A space solar field will undoubtedly meet the energy requirement to a great extent. So what do you think about the solar power plant to be built in space? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
