The new Social Media Law, which came into force last year, achieved its purpose a while ago. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest opened their offices by appointing a representative in Turkey. The law was seen as a very important step, especially in overcoming communication problems and ensuring the security of user data.
However, this was not enough to calm the discussions about social media platforms. Sending a video message to the Turkic Council Media Forum event held today, President Erdoğan made a lot of speeches. Here are the details…
President Erdogan: We must cut our own belly on media and communication
Sending a video to the event, Erdoğan used the following expressions. “Today, with the spread of social media, we, along with all humanity, are frequently exposed to disinformation campaigns. Due to false and distorted news, the lives of millions of defenseless people around the world are darkened, and serious traumas and dramas are experienced. Social media channels, where there is no control or self-control, have come to the point of threatening both democracy, social peace and national security of states today.
No country or society is free from the destructive effect of digital fascism, no matter how developed it is. Besides digital fascism, the Turkish world also suffers from the double standard of the international press. As with other strategic issues, we have to cut ourselves off in media and communication. As the Turkish world, we should take initiative in this regard, share experience, join forces and seek ways to make the most effective use of the opportunities at our disposal. ”
While the statement made by Erdoğan signals that the work for domestic digital media platforms will accelerate, “Are new bans coming? brought the question to mind. In fact, the government is already working on a new social media law. However, the details and content of this law are not yet known.
