Coming with increased thermal performance and efficiency
Qualcomm hasn’t released the exact specifications of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 Platform, but says the new chip brings better performance and better thermal capabilities than the previous generation, thanks to a new platform suite. However, the new processor, which will first appear in Meta Quest Pro, will offer a 30 percent increase in thermal performance and a 50 percent increase in sustainable peak performance.
According to Qualcomm’s statements, Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 comes with a new image processing pipeline that unlocks full color video pass-through (MR) in mixed reality with a latency of less than 10ms. It also offers support for ‘simultaneous sensing’ technologies, including 8K 60fps 360-degree video, head, hand and joystick tracking, 3D reconstruction, automatic room mapping and high pixel density.
Introduced in 2019, the Snapdragon XR2 platform powered many VR and augmented reality headsets, including Meta Quest 2 and Pico 4. Qualcomm said the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 will be available on multiple OEM devices starting with Meta Quest Pro by the end of the year.
