Flagship phones gain satellite support
If we recall, Apple makes use of Globalstar’s satellites as part of the Emergency SOS feature of iPhones. Snapdragon Satellite will rely on Iridium Communications, which has 66 satellites in orbit. However, Qualcomm says that the feature, which will support two-way messaging over satellite for emergencies, will have a global coverage.
Snapdragon Satellite will only be supported by Android phones with newly introduced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors. Considering that the new flagship processor has the Snapdragon X70 5G modem, which allows satellite communication, we can say that this is not surprising.
It will be available in the second half of 2023
Qualcomm has announced that the Snapdragon Satellite will be coming to compatible smartphones in the second half of 2023. But he didn’t mention in which countries the new feature will be available or whether it will be free.
Details of the investment made by Qualcomm in Iridium Communications are not yet known. Iridium CEO Matt Desch said that “millions of users will be connected to the service” as part of the new collaboration.
