READING NOW Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 detailed test results have emerged!

Information about Qualcomm’s new platform Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 continues to create excitement. The ray-tracing support and the promise of high performance in the mobile graphics unit make the new processor a curiosity. Finally, the detailed test results of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have surfaced. Comparisons with its siblings Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and 8 Plus Gen 1 are remarkable!

How is the comparison made?

The test applications used in the benchmarks are AnTuTu, GeekBench, GFXBench and MLPerf. Among these applications, AnTuTu is a more general test. Graphics unit, processor and memory performance are tested, while the user is given points based on the experience offered. GeekBench is more of a CPU-oriented test. Processes such as image compression, processing, speech recognition, physics simulation are applied. GFXBench is the application that prioritizes the graphics unit among these applications. It is a GPU test with high texture quality with Vulkan and OpenGL 3.1 and pushing the phone. It is based on the FPS values given by the device. Finally, MLPerf Mobile tests artificial intelligence performance. Object detection and speech tests are applied on the device.

As so far, the new Snapdragon has a performance increase of about 10 percent compared to its siblings. Although there is an increase of 35 percent in general, let us remind you that AnTuTu looks at the processor performance.

In GeekBench 5, we see an increase of approximately 30 percent in multi-core performance. There is a 10% increase in single-core performance. Considering that the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 is already a very powerful platform, these rates are seriously impressive.

Unfortunately, Qualcomm did not share much information about the Adreno GPU, which will come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. For this reason, it is difficult to comment on the graphics card side for now. As can be seen in the table, there is a significant performance increase in all tests except the 1080p T-Rex test. There is a 24 percent increase in the 1080p Manhattan test, and a full 44 percent increase in the 1440p Aztec Vulkan test.

Qualcomm aims to offer higher AI performance in this generation than ever before. The new platform has achieved very high scores in visual and object recognition as seen in the table. In addition, there are artificial intelligence improvements of 65 percent per watt, and generally 435 percent, compared to past processors.

Devices equipped with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be available to the end user by the end of 2022. Brands benefiting from the new platform include OnePlus, Sharp, Asus, Xiaomi, Honor, Sony, Oppo, Redmi and Motorola.
