A large number of 2022 Android high-end phones are starting to arrive, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor; Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series is among them. Now, a new leak indicates that the improved Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus may debut sooner than originally thought.
According to Mobile Chip Expert on Chinese social media site Weibo, Qualcomm is looking to speed up its release cycle this year and we may see Android phones using the updated chipset sooner than expected.
Taiwanese chip maker TSMC is said to have received an order to release the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus as quickly as possible. We expected the new chips to be available in the second half of the year, but if this new information is correct, it could be ready for use in phones much sooner than expected.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can now be seen on Samsung Galaxy S22 series phones and will appear once again with OnePlus 10.
However, the performance of this CPU is not expected to see a big jump with the Plus version. In terms of its specs, no details have been leaked yet, but it will use the same 8 nanometer architecture as the original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus, which we saw a lot last year, increased its speed by 5% and AI processing by 20% compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 888, so a similar performance upgrade can be expected this time around.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is described by almost all critics as a good mobile processor. It is 20% faster overall and reduces power consumption by 30% compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 888. In this way, it helps smartphones work longer without being charged.
But the smartphone industry doesn’t like to sit still. Reports surfaced this weekend that the A15 Bionic chip in the latest iPhone 13 phones quite comfortably beats the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the Galaxy S22 series in benchmark tests.
It can be guessed that Qualcomm is definitely not happy with this situation. With the Google Pixel 6 and MediaTek releasing some promising mobile CPUs of their own that use Google’s own Tensor chip instead of a chip developed by Qualcomm, the pressure is mounting for Qualcomm to continue to offer better chips.
