Snapchat, or Snap as it has long been known, has been sued with the US Patent Office (USPTO). The company opened this interesting case for Snapchat Spectacles, the name of its smart glasses. According to this, everything started when the patent office thought that this name was not suitable for branding. The platform, which has lost its power in social media for a long time, is still hopeful about the Spectacles investment.

Interesting case to the US Patent Office for Snapchat Spectacles

In fact, it all started with the use of the word Spectacles, which means glasses in English, by Snapchat as a brand name for smart glasses. The company applied to the US Patent Office to brand the name of the smart glasses it introduced in 2016.

In its examination, the office decided that the name glasses is used in smart glasses and that the product does not have the distinguishing feature that will cause it to take the glasses brand. Snap, on the other hand, filed a lawsuit against the institution after this decision. The company, on the other hand, believes that smart glasses models using the name Spectacles differ from their competitors with features such as camera use and instant video capture.

Spectacles AR glasses introduced in mid-2021 but not yet available

Although Snapchat sued Spectacles, the smart glasses were a complete failure for the company. The company, which was at the top of social media before the smart glasses move, could not get the fruit of this big investment. Although it did not get the desired result, Snap also released the second version of Spectacles. Finally, the Spectacles model with AR, augmented reality technology, emerged. However, this model is currently only used internally.

Snap uses smart glasses specifically to connect to the application and take photos and short videos. Despite the Spectacles vending machines that lined up in front of them when they first came out, Snap lost a huge $40 million in glasses. The main reasons for this are the poor design of the Snapchat smart glasses model and the fact that it is quite dysfunctional outside the Snapchat application.

The model, which was almost unrivaled for the first period and had a price of 130 dollars, appeared in 2018 with its second version. However, this model, which has a more advanced camera, did not meet the expectations like the first model. Again, the company came up with the third version of the glasses in 2020. The company’s AR-based Spectacles model, on the other hand, has the possibility to reverse all the winds with the Metaverse current.
