Smoking is harmful to health, we already know that. However, a recent study has revealed that smoking is much more harmful than you think, for one of our most vital organs.

During the 2022 congress of the European Society of Cardiology, a group of researchers presented a study in which they found that smokers have a much weaker heart than non-smokers.

Even if you quit smoking, your heart does not fully recover

The more cigarettes you smoke, the slower your heart functions, the researchers found. Even when you quit smoking, not all functions of the heart fully recover. When you smoke, your heart muscles weaken too much. When your heart muscle weakens, your heart can’t pump enough blood for your body. This means that the body cannot get the oxygen and nutrients it needs.

The study included both current smokers, ex-smokers and never-smokers. Over the 10-year study period of participants with an average age of 56, it turned out that current smokers have a weaker, thicker, and heavier heart.

It was observed that those who quit smoking did not fully recover and their hearts were still working hard. What are you thinking? Please do not forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
