Industry analyst company Canalys has released its report on the wearable technologies market for the fourth quarter of 2022. While the report sheds light on important information, Google’s success with the Pixel Watch is dazzling.

The Pixel Watch is Google’s first product in this category, and everyone probably dreams of making such a big impact with the first product. Because, Pixel Watch has become a big “hit” on a global scale and has risen to second place in the market, surpassing brands such as Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi in the last quarter. The leader, unsurprisingly, is Apple.

Pixel Watch made good on Google

The “wearable band” market report published by Canalys includes smart watches, basic watches and straps. While Google captured 8 percent of the wearables market share in the fourth quarter of 2022 with the Pixel Watch, Apple had the lion’s share with 27.5 percent. Samsung, on the other hand, was able to find itself in the 5th place in the list with 5.9 percent.

However, in the last quarter, all companies witnessed large decreases. While Apple experienced a serious drop of 17 percent, Google suffered a 25 percent drop due to declining Fitbit shipments, but it was supported by a 16 percent smartwatch growth with the launch of the Pixel Watch. In other words, thanks to the Pixel Watch, Google smoothed the fall and jumped to second place, surpassing its competitors. Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung and others witnessed “radical” declines.

Pixel Watch’s success is tremendous

According to the report, Google sold 880,000 Pixel Watches in Q4 of 2022. This accounts for 22 percent of the company’s total wearable devices. Moreover, Google only sells the Pixel Watch in 9 countries. For example, the leader Apple sells its watches in more than 60 countries, and Samsung in about 31 countries. So the success of the Pixel Watch, released in October, is tremendous.

Apple, the undisputed leader

When we take our perspective from the 4th quarter and look at the whole of 2022, we see that Apple has grown by 5 percent annually and has reached the 22.6 percent slice. In second place is Xiaomi with a 41% decline and a 9.3% market share. It is followed by Huawei with 8.3 percent, Samsung with 7.7 percent and Google with 6.4 percent. In the meantime, it should be noted that unlike the others, Samsung sells “smart watches”. In other words, Mi Band, Fitbit, etc., which are in the hands of the company and others. There are no basic watch models. In addition, Canalys expects the smartwatch market to grow by 2 percent in 2023.
