MediaTek performed the first live demo of Wi-Fi 7 in the world earlier this year. The Taiwan-based semiconductor company drew attention to the multi-connection processing (MLO) technology of the WiFi 7 standard (IEEE 802.11be) in the demos. MLO collects multiple channels in different frequency bands at the same time, ensuring that network traffic flows smoothly even if there is interference in the bands.
What are the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 features?
WiFi 7 speeds
It is stated that the WiFi 7 connection can use 320MHz channels and supports 4K square amplitude modulation (QAM) technology, providing 2.4 times faster speeds than WiFi 6 even with the same number of antennas. WiFi 7 is expected to deliver speeds of at least 30 gigabits per second, with a maximum speed of up to 40Gbps. While the maximum speed of WiFi 6 is 9.6Gb per second, WiFi 5 can offer a speed of 3.5Gb per second.
Apple could switch straight to WiFi 7
There is no information yet when the iPhone and other Apple products will support WiFi 7 connectivity. Apple doesn’t even offer the WiFi 6E connectivity available on its devices since 2019. Currently, all Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, MacBook, use Wi-Fi 6.
WiFi 7 may come to first modems and computers
The WiFi 7 standard is expected to come to modems, routers and laptops before coming to Android phones and iPhones. MediaTek demoed WiFi 7 in January 2022 and announced WiFi 7 chips in May 2022. Qualcomm is also working on WiFi 7 chip options, which are expected to be released in the same time frame. Intel also said it plans to use WiFi 7 in laptops by 2024.
