Australian scientists analyzed nearly 400 scientific papers examining how wearing a smart bracelet affects increased physical activity and associated physiological and psychosocial outcomes. It turns out that such wearables encourage people to take about 1,800 extra steps a day.
The scientific articles reviewed provided data on about 164,000 people worldwide. A meta-analysis of their activities showed that wearing a smart wristband increased walking time by an average of 40 minutes per day, contributing to a reduction of about 1kg in body weight over a few months.
Encourages people to act
The effect on other physiological and psychosocial aspects was usually small and often negligible. However, in people with type 2 diabetes and some other conditions, smart wristbands have helped reduce increased activity, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
According to scientists, such wearable devices that track daily physical activities are important in changing people’s behavior, habits and lifestyles in the long run. In parallel with this, people are motivated to take more steps every day.
