Asteroids, which mean pieces of celestial bodies in the solar system, come to the fore frequently. In the news, it is stated that these meteorites of different sizes will pass close to our planet. In addition, many people are afraid of such news because of the possibility of these objects hitting the Earth one day.

Now, it has been announced that another meteorite is approaching our planet. According to Livescience, this very large object will pass close to Earth. So it will not pose any danger.

A skyscraper-sized asteroid will pass near Earth today

July 17, named KY4, 2022, according to NASA; in other words, it will pass within 6.1 million kilometers of our planet today. It is also stated that the meteorite is the size of a 50-story skyscraper. According to experts, the 2022 KY4 has a diameter of 88 meters and travels at a speed of 27,000 km / h. This shows that the asteroid is 8 times faster than a rifle bullet.

The approaching asteroid is expected to pass at a distance of about 6.1 million kilometers from Earth. For this reason, it does not pose a problem for now, such as hitting the Earth. According to Livescience, this meteorite has approached Earth several times before. 2022 KY4 has passed near our planet in 1959 and 1948 before. According to NASA’s calculations, the next pass of the meteorite will occur in May 2048.

As we mentioned, the possibility of an asteroid of this size hitting the Earth is quite a scary subject. Moreover, even the fact that an object of this size gets 1 millimeter closer to the Earth’s orbit over the years can indicate a big problem. That’s why NASA and other space agencies continue to carefully study meteorites. Even defense systems are being installed in this regard. NASA took a step on planetary defense systems in 2021 and launched the DART vehicle into space, which will change the direction of asteroids in possible disasters.
