Instagram is offering a bunch of features designed to give users more control over the app, including a new Silent Mode.

Silent Mode works similarly to your phone’s Do Not Disturb setting. When active, Instagram does not send notifications to your device. It also displays a note on your profile that you’re in “silent mode”, and anyone who tries to message you gets an automatic reply stating you’re not available.

It is possible to set Quiet Mode to activate automatically at certain times of the day. When you go outside of these hours, Instagram sends a collective notification consisting of a summary of your notifications.

Anyone can use Quiet Mode, but the company says it can activate the feature, especially if teens realize they’re spending too much time scrolling through their news feeds late at night. Quiet Mode is available in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom starting today. It will not take long for it to arrive in other regions.

Alongside the new Silent Mode, Instagram is bringing a bunch of other features designed to give people more control over the photos and videos they see on the platform. You will now be able to tell the app what types of content you don’t want suggested to you. Starting from the Explore tab, you can select multiple tiles and tap “I’m not interested” to shape Instagram’s content algorithm. This feature will also affect what you see when you search for posts.
