While it has been discussed for a while whether Apple will allow applications other than the App Store to be installed on devices by sideloading, Craig Federighi, Apple’s head of software engineering, made statements about how dangerous this could be.

Speaking at the Web Summit 2021 conference, Federighi referred to the Digital Markets Law proposed by the European Commission and stated that Apple users could be in great danger if this law is passed.

Federighi: Sideloading is a cybercriminal’s best friend and using it on iPhone makes it easier for cybercriminals”

Federighi, who said that Apple’s iOS ecosystem is a more protected structure against cyber attacks and malware compared to Android, said that the fact that applications can be downloaded from a single point is one of the main factors that create the security of iPhone users. He also added that Apple has the chance to examine each application installed on the market one by one in order to ensure this security.

On the other hand, the App Store is not a white spoon out of milk. Because 18 of the 1,000 highest-grossing App Store apps are guilty of defrauding users of around $50 million. The report, based on figures from market research firm Appfigures, shows that scam apps have earned as much as $48 million from iOS users. Some of this money is expected to go into Apple’s coffers, albeit indirectly, as the iPhone manufacturer receives 30% of the revenue from the App Store from the developers.
