Now, a special report shared by Variety has revealed some details about Shrek 5. Chris Melandri, CEO of Illumination, the famous animation company behind movies like Mario and Despicable Me, gave the signals of the movie.
Original cast wanted to be brought back
First of all, it should be noted that Melandri also works for Shrek’s production company DreamWorks Animation. The Super Mario Bros., which will be released on April 5th. The famous filmmaker, who made a statement before the movie, stated that DreamWorks is working on Shrek 5. Melandri added that she wanted to bring in the original cast, including Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Fiona) to voice the new movie.
Saying that they want to bring the elements that the fans love, Melandri said that while he can’t say for sure at the moment, the talks with the actors are continuing and are going quite well: “We are waiting for the cast to come back. Talks are starting and every sign we’re getting is that the players are very eager to return.”
In 2022, we saw the release of Shrek’s spin-off film “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” focusing on the Puss in Boots character. While the film was appreciated by the fans, it also managed to get an Oscar nomination. Eddie Murphy, who gave life to the character of Donkey in Shrek films after this success, which showed that the series is still very popular, said that he would accept a new Shrek movie immediately, and then stated that he loved the character very much and wanted a movie for Donkey to come.

Melandri also told Variety that Murphy’s comments excite her and are a sign that the cast is eager to return. When asked if the donkey character would be suitable for a separate movie, he replied “no doubt”. This also revealed that there may be a movie focused only on Donkey, in addition to Shrek 5, possibly soon.
The new movie, which will be the fifth in the Shrek series, is in its very early stages as even the deals have not been finalized yet.
