As the brands introduce their new electric cars one by one, it continues to be debated whether these vehicles are truly environmentally friendly. Electric cars do not release any gas to the nature during travel, but the fact that most of the emissions that occur during the production phase of the vehicles and the electricity they use are obtained from fossil fuels brings with it a big question mark. Toyota President Akio Toyoda also revealed some of the disadvantages of electric cars in his statement.

Electric cars are not as environmentally friendly as it seems

Akio Toyoda claims that if all cars run on electricity, Japan will be without electricity in the summer. Toyoda said the infrastructure needed to support all people in the country to use fully electric cars would cost Japan between $135 billion and $358 billion.

Also criticizing the ministers who suggest that fossil fuel-consuming vehicles should be banned, Toyota President implied that these people are talking without taking into account the situations that electric cars will create. Toyoda claimed that if Japan rushed to ban gasoline-powered cars, the current business model of the auto industry would collapse and millions would be unemployed.

Toyoda also said that in a country like Japan, which gets most of its electricity from coal and natural gas, electric vehicles are not helping the environment. That’s why Toyota President stated that electric vehicles will increase the carbon dioxide rate in such countries in the short term.

Toyoda also believes that electric cars do not appeal to all segments of society due to their costs. Saying that electric cars will remain unrivaled, especially with the new regulations, Toyota President claims that buying a vehicle may become impossible for most of the society.

With all these statements, Toyota President added new questions to the question marks about electric cars. So what do you think about electric cars? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
