A lawsuit filed against Google in the US alleges that the Google Maps service caused the death of a person. In September 2022, a user named Philip Paxson died by falling into the river with his vehicle after the application tried to pass him over a destroyed bridge while navigating with Google Maps. His family also blames the Google Maps service.
It is stated that there is more than one person responsible for the incident. For example, intermediary companies responsible for the maintenance of the bridge are accused of not fulfilling their duties. It was also stated that the signs stating that the bridge was demolished were removed by vandals. Paxson therefore had to follow the instructions Google provided him.
Google spokesperson stated that they are deeply sorry for the accident in question and that they always try to provide the correct route to users with Google Maps and that they have started to investigate the issue.
