Activision Blizzard has announced that its 2 highly anticipated big games, Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4, have been delayed and disappointed the excited players once again. The company made the following statement at the meeting where it announced its 3rd quarter earnings: “We will bring a significant amount of content from Blizzard to players next year. However, we have to inform that Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV have been delayed.”
This clearly shows that both games have been heavily delayed by the roadmap originally drawn, but it’s worth paying attention to the language used in the first half of the statement. While there is a ‘significant amount of content’ expected for next year (2022), it’s unclear whether these two games are included. So it looks like we might even have to wait until 2023 for both Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4.
The delay for Diablo 4 is partly due to the game’s director and chief designer leaving the company in August, and a similar story applies to Overwatch 2, with game director Jeff Kaplan leaving in April.
While the publisher has made it clear that they see broadcast delays as opportunities for development teams to further polish the games, it’s true that accusations of sexual harassment and discrimination have left teams under-staffed or entirely new members.
