Shipping giant UPS has filed a trademark application for the metaverse with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

According to the filing, UPS plans to provide virtual packages, shipping labels, apparel, uniforms, hats, and vehicles on the metaverse.

According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, UPS’s metaverse move will be part of a gaming experience that includes sending packages. Gerben also pointed to Roblox’s virtual brand activations, suggesting that UPS could be a part of it.

In February 2018, UPS introduced a model for its product exchange service with a POS system to accept different cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin.

The company also joined the Blockchain in Trucking Alliance (BiTA) in November 2017 with Coyote Logistics to increase transparency and reduce costs among carriers, shippers and consumers.

Institutional companies continue to be included in the metaverse hype. Last month, consumer goods giant Unilever was among the companies that applied.
