The company said SparkCognition artificial intelligence algorithms will process and analyze large volumes of seismic data in Shell’s search for new oil reserves. This technology will also be used to boost offshore oil production.
It will speed up exploration work and save money
Gabriel Guerra, Shell’s vice president of innovation and efficiency, said in a statement that the company is committed to finding new ways to analyze discovery data. He also stated that their aim is to increase operational efficiency and speed, as well as increase production and exploration success.
The new process could reduce exploration work from nine months to nine days. Shell and SparkCognition said the technology will create subsurface images using less seismic scanning than usual and will help protect the deep seas.
Less seismic scanning will speed up the exploration workflow and save high performance computing cost.
