The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) held a meeting last night about unidentified flying objects, which continues to be a topic of great controversy around the world. However, what was said and the images shown at this meeting were misrepresented, especially on Twitter.

Some news accounts and influencers with millions of followers have shared that NASA has acknowledged the existence of UFOs for the first time. But the truth of the matter and what was said at the meeting were completely different.

Some of the erroneous posts that have reached millions on Twitter:

No, NASA did not acknowledge the existence of UFOs with this meeting:

NASA already had a team investigating UFOs and unexplained events. The establishment of this team was announced on June 9, 2022. Moreover, this team was doing research on “Unidentified Abnormal Events (UAP)” in a much broader way. The team began its work in October 2022.

So NASA certainly didn’t accept UFOs as new. Technically, everything we see in the sky and we don’t know what it is is a UFO. Therefore, NASA defines such objects, which have not been explained for years, as UFOs. However, NASA’s definition of UAP and the scope of its work on it are much broader.

What is the difference between UFO and UAP, why doesn’t NASA say “UFO”?

As we said in the previous paragraph, NASA is doing a much more comprehensive research. NASA’s definition of UAP is “observations of the sky that cannot be described as aircraft or known natural phenomena.” In other words, not only flying objects, but also all events seen in the sky and the reason behind it is not known in the first place are examined.

What was NASA’s meeting for?

The meeting held by NASA on May 31 was a meeting where the research team explained how they examined, evaluated and concluded the events.

At the meeting, it was also shared how many of the events examined so far were concluded. NASA stated that only a small part of around 800 mysterious events cannot be explained, only 2% to 5% of the 50-100 reports they receive each month are unexplained.

The video shown as an example of this was actually one of the images shared as ‘new’ on Twitter. The image, which is also included in the sample Tweets above, was previously shared by the UFO research team of the US Department of Defense:

How do you protect yourself from information on Twitter?

Twitter is a platform where every account, regardless of size, can share as they wish. Unconfirmed, uninvestigated posts also spread very quickly, especially when it comes to the biggest mysteries among the public, such as UFOs and aliens.

In order to protect yourself from such disinformation and misinformation, it is imperative that you activate the inquiry mechanism individually. This is true not only for Twitter, but also for every news, information and claim that comes up.
