Although it has been tried for a long time, “autonomous driving”, which we are more familiar with with Tesla models recently, has not yet won the trust of everyone. Although there are many reasons behind this – mostly personal ones – we can say that this technology has made remarkable progress today. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re perfect yet.

For this reason, companies continue to work at full speed to perfect the autonomous driving technology and make it more reliable. Japanese technology giant Sony, one of the companies that continues these studies on this subject, is here with its new sensors introduced at the Technology Day event held this year.

Environment is detected by processing low levels of light

The basis of the technology in question is the LiDAR sensor, which we also see in smart vacuums. To put it briefly, this sensor, located on the ledge on the brooms, measures the distance of objects with the help of light. As a result, the map projected on our phone screen can be created.

In the technology offered by Sony, SPAD pixels are used. These pixels capture light and convert it into an electrical signal. Electrical signals are routed to the main chip via a connection called Cu-Cu. Thanks to the single chip in question, distances are processed both quickly and sharply, whether far or close.

The sensors can detect an object 200 meters away and the driver is offered multiple perspectives. Considering all this, we can say that at the end of the day, a safer driving experience will be offered than ever before.
