While it is stated that HDD sales have decreased significantly, especially on the consumer side, manufacturers continue their development work for the corporate side. Seagate will launch 30TB drives next year.
Seagate 30TB+ HAMR HDD is coming
In HDD technologies, different solutions are being developed such as increasing the capacity by increasing the number of layers or increasing the performance by using double heads. In this way, there is a target of exceeding the 200TB level in 10 years.
Is the HDD market dying?
Seagate, one of the leading HDD manufacturers, announced that they will go beyond 30TB with new generation technologies from the middle of next year. The adventure, which will start with 30TB capacity in the first place, will go up to the 50TB limit. Shipments will be to certain customers and in limited production.
Seagate uses HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology in the new drives. As can be understood from the HAMR expansion, it is a heated system. This is where the capacity advantage of the technique, which allows weak magnets to adhere to the disc surface heated with a small laser, and realizes this in a very small area, comes from here.
