Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a robotic finger covered in living human skin that closely resembles Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cyborg assassin. This robotic finger is completely covered with living human skin and is self-healing.
Produced under laboratory conditions, this skin is strong and flexible enough to withstand the bending of the robotic finger, while at the same time, more interestingly, it has the ability to self-heal. “This is a very interesting study and an important step forward in the field,” says Ritu Raman, an MIT engineer who also builds machines with living components from the research team, saying, “Biological materials are interesting because they can dynamically sense and adapt to their environment.”
This study can make the robots that are expected to take part in active life in the future look like a “real person” with living skin, so those science fiction movies we watch may come true very soon
