2001: A Space Oddysey, which was released in 1968 and was among the unique space movies of that period, had an iconic scene. In this scene, one of the spacecraft attendants was serving the astronauts flying the spacecraft while wearing velcro shoes. The remarkable thing here was that the attendant was walking quite comfortably, just like he was on earth. Moreover, even in the upside down state, everything was very normal.
So was this a movie legend or was it real? Italian astronaut and current number one of the International Space Station (ISS) Samantha Cristoforetti decided to do a cosplay to see if this scene in the movie was real. The cosplay revealed that the scene in question is not a myth, but a reality.
The scene in 2001: A Space Oddysey was as follows:
2001: The attendant on A Space Oddysey wore a special Velcro shoe. Velcro placed on the sole of this shoe allowed the spaceship to walk as if on earth. Samantha Cristoforetti, who shared the words “I need to know this. Can you really walk in an environment where there is no gravity with Velcro shoes? Very soon…”, reenacted the scene on the ISS.
Samantha Cristoforetti’s first post on Twitter was as follows:
Prepared for the scene in the movie, Samantha Cristoforetti later tried to recreate this scene. By recording those moments, the Italian astronaut revealed that the scene was real. Although the movements were quite slow, the iconic scene was able to be animated in a real space environment.
Here is that scene on the ISS!
“2022 A Space Odyssey. It seems you can actually walk in space using Velcro shoes. Slow, very very slow…”
