The Digital Anti-Hate Center conducted a research on the messages of Instagram users. According to the results of the research, Instagram does not pay enough attention to the harassment messages its users receive.
The Center for Combating Digital Hate focused on the Direct Message portion of the research, working with five women. As a result, he concluded that the social media platform did not take enough action for its messages of harassment and hostility. So what are the statistics in the report? Let’s take a look at the details of the news together.
Instagram only takes action for 10% of harassment messages!
According to the research conducted by the Digital Anti-Hate Center on five women, 90% of harassment made via Direct Messages does not impose a sanction. The accounts tested in the research have a total of 4.8 million followers, and 8717 Direct Messages were analyzed in the research. 1 in 15 messages sent to women violates harassment and abuse rules.
For voice messages, 1 out of 7 voice messages is harassment. Also, the platform allows anyone to search users. The most important result of the research is that Instagram takes action for only 1 out of 10 harassment messages.
Center for Combating Digital Hate stated that the system should be improved and channels where women were abused should be closed based on the results of the research. The United Kingdom also said that the sending of obscene images without the consent of the recipients should be prohibited.
Instagram stated that it did not agree with the results of the research. The Head of Security at the Center for Combating Digital Hate explained that this is unacceptable and is a gender-based system.
