Technology giant Google, which produces Pixel smartphones to set an example for Android devices, has had major problems in brand prestige in recent years, but the Pixel 6 series, introduced last year, has managed to lift the brand higher than ever before. Adhering to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors for years, the company used its own Tensor processor in the Pixel 6 family for the first time last year. Although Tensor processors offer high quality in terms of price performance, they lag behind their competitors in raw performance. However, it seems that Google is not bothered by this event.

Google puts more emphasis on AI performance

In this week’s episode of the podcast by the Made by Google team, the company talked about the performance of Tensor and Tensor G2. Monika Gupta, Senior Product Management Director of Google Silicon Teams, stated that when designing new Pixel phones, they need to predict the future of machine learning models and producing their own processors gives them an advantage in this regard.

In the continuation of the meeting, the benchmark scores of Tensor processors were discussed. According to Gupta, classic benchmark tests used to serve a purpose, but now the industry has evolved and testing isn’t as important as it used to be, he said. The team, which has repeatedly suppressed the importance Google attaches to artificial intelligence innovations and experiences in its smartphones, states that these experiences cannot be measured in standard benchmark tests. For this reason, Google stated that they are not bothered by the Tensor processor lagging in benchmark tests.

When asked about the future of the Tensor processor, Gupta stated that they will work to make users’ lives easier. According to Gupta’s statements, the main goal of the Pixel team is to make it easier to take photos, make calls and general phone use, and the team will continue to produce chips that work efficiently on this vision.
