According to the news of Sputnik, Russia’s Federal Information Technologies and Mass Media Supervision Agency (Roskomnadzor) sent a letter to Facebook’s umbrella company Meta Platforms Inc., requesting the removal of censorship applied to Russian media outlets. However, it was stated that Meta did not fulfill this request.

Russia imposes partial access block on Facebook

Russia’s Federal Information Technologies and Mass Media Supervision Agency (Roskomnadzor) announced that they will partially restrict access to Facebook starting today. The institution announced that it was decided that Facebook violated the fundamental human rights and freedoms, as well as the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens.

Roskomnadzor conveyed the following in an announcement published on its website:

On February 25, the Office of the Chief Prosecutor in agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Facebook’s fundamental human rights and rights violations It was decided that it is a social network that violates the rights and freedoms of citizens of Russia. In accordance with the decision of the Attorney General’s Office, it was decided to partially restrict access to Facebook as of February 25, 2022.

Stating that Facebook has censored four organizations belonging to the Russian media, Roskomnadzor reminded that such actions against media organs operating in Russia are prohibited in accordance with the relevant law. Calling Meta to lift the censorship, Roskomnadzor said that the social network ignored this request.
