Samsung Display is the world’s largest manufacturer of OLED panels for mobile devices. This unit of Samsung produces OLED panels used in almost all high-end phones, including all flagship iPhones since the iPhone X. The company is now announcing its desire to make zero-bezel OLED panels, after moving from traditional OLED panels to nearly bezel-less panels for today’s smartphones.

Samsung is developing zero-bezel OLED displays

Samsung Display showcased its vision for the future of smartphones at what appears to be a presentation. Alongside the nearly borderless OLED displays with a notch at the top, the company also showcased current-generation OLED panels with perforations and pill-shaped cutouts for the front cameras. On the same slide, the company also introduced OLED panels, which it calls ‘All Around Full Screen’. According to the company, such panels will completely wrap the front of a smartphone and will not leave any bezels on the front. Such zero-bezel displays will have 3D lamination technologies and edge brightness control.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that Apple is asking its display panel suppliers (LG Display and Samsung Display) to develop zero-bezel display panels for future smartphones. While we are still a few years away from such phones, we can expect flagship Galaxy phones to have similar screens once Samsung develops such screens.

Samsung is also developing UPC (Under Panel Camera) cameras for smartphones, and such panels are already used in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. It seems more and more that future smartphones may feature zero-bezel displays with no visible cutouts for the front cameras. However, as we have seen from the Z Folds, these cameras have not yet reached the desired level in terms of quality.
