The Galaxy S 22 series phones, which Samsung will introduce on February 9, 2022, will be produced, albeit partially, from a new and sustainable material. The company said its new devices use material from discarded fishing nets. Samsung says it will first include this material in products it will announce this week, and will eventually start using it across its entire device lineup.

Samsung notes that we tend to think of plastic bottles and grocery bags as the main culprits of ocean pollution, but marine biologists are most concerned about microplastics and discarded nets. Stray nets continue to trap and kill marine life, including endangered species such as the Hawaiian seal. With more than 640,000 tons of fishing nets thrown away each year, this is becoming a worsening problem.

Samsung is not the first company to incorporate waste into its devices. Last year, Microsoft announced the Ocean Plastic Mouse. The mouse has a case made of 20 percent recycled plastic.
