Samsung is looking to catch up with Apple and Qualcomm with its own modem that allows smartphones to communicate with satellites.

The company announced its own solution that allows smartphones to communicate with satellites, starting a new technology war. The chip, called a 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) modem, will allow smartphones using it to connect to the satellite in areas where cellular connectivity is not available.

The company said it aims to integrate this technology into its own Exynos chip, which is used in many Samsung smartphones but not in the current high-end Samsung Galaxy S23. The Korean tech giant describes this technology as using “satellites and other non-terrestrial means” to provide connectivity in remote areas.

Min Goo Kim, vice president of communications processor development at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement that their aim is to “lead to advance hybrid terrestrial-NTN communications ecosystems worldwide,” and continued: “This milestone marks the launch of the industry’s first commercial 4G LTE modem in 2009 and 2018. Building on our rich heritage in wireless technologies, following the launch of the industry’s first 5G modem in .

With the satellite connectivity capability offered by Apple in its latest iPhone 14 smartphone series and Qualcomm announcing a similar technology, Samsung’s new announcement is starting a new struggle between tech giants. Interestingly, Samsung plans to integrate the satellite modem into its own chip, while their latest high-end phones use Snapdragon processors.
