Like many technology companies, Samsung wants to make the most of the artificial intelligence (AI) trend after ChatGPT revolutionized the technology world. The company confirmed that it will launch an “Artificial Intelligence Phone” next year, as the claims made a few days ago said. Samsung also recently announced the Gauss Artificial Intelligence platform. It was speculated that the Galaxy S24 could be the first phone to be released with generative AI features.
It can be predicted that Samsung will probably not make a definitive statement on this issue until mid-January, when the launch of the Galaxy S24 is expected. However, the Korean giant gave a hint implying that the Galaxy S24 will be its first artificial intelligence phone. It’s safe to say it’s almost official now, as Samsung plans to trademark the terms “AI Phone” and “AI Smartphone” in the European Union (EU) and the UK.
There’s no denying that this branding effort is incredibly bold, but it can also be considered pointless. Regulators are unlikely to grant such generic trademarks to Samsung or any other company in the space. Any smartphone with AI features, whether running natively or through an app, will qualify as an “AI Phone” and “AI Smartphone”.
The Pixel 8 series can also be said to be the first AI phones, with Google showcasing a multitude of special AI capabilities during the launch event. Also, the iPhone 15 is actually an artificial intelligence phone. The same goes for other iPhones that can run the official ChatGPT app and any Android device on the market, whether made by Samsung, Google, or a different entity. It’s also worth noting that before ChatGPT, most phones had built-in AI features, although they weren’t productive AI experiences.
Still, Samsung’s effort to trademark these terms illustrates a few important things. First of all, Samsung will be fully focused on productive AI phones next year. A second related implication is that the Galaxy S24 series will be the first models to be launched as AI phones.
