Current data shows that Samsung remains the top smartphone vendor in the first quarter of 2022. This corresponds to a 1.2% year-on-year decline in first-quarter shipments for the company, which has a global market share of 23.4%. Of course, Apple comes second behind Samsung.
By selling 56.5 million iPhones between January and March, Apple took 18% of the worldwide smartphone pie. Unlike Samsung, Apple managed to achieve a 2.2% annual gain in shipments.
First quarter leader Samsung
Samsung became the leading smartphone manufacturer worldwide in the first quarter. IDC ranks Xiaomi in third place, which sold 39.9 million phones in the first quarter. This gave the company a 12.7% market share over the period. Oppo follows Xiaomi with 27.4 million shipments and Vivo with 25.3 million shipments. Oppo’s sales fell 27% and Vivo’s sales fell 28%. Oppo’s first quarter market share was 8.7%, while Vivo’s 8.1%. Total sales from other manufacturers are 91.4 million.
Decline in global smartphone shipments
IDC stated that overall, global smartphone shipments fell 8.9% year-on-year in the first quarter. In the first quarter of last year, 344.7 million smartphones were shipped worldwide. This year, 314.1 million (3.5% less than projected) shipments were made in the same period.
