Looking for new technologies for widespread use instead of costly OLED displays, Samsung started developing QD-OLED technology two years ago. However, things are not going as planned.

What does QD-OLED technology offer?

The new hybrid display technology, defined as QD-OLED, combines quantum dots and organic-based pixel structures. When a light hits nanoparticles ranging in size from 2-10 nm, each point emits light at a different wavelength. Differences in wavelengths of light emitted also lead to the formation of different colors. QD screens can also achieve deep blacks, brighter colors and energy efficiency thanks to these tiny nanoparticles.

Samsung started test production of QD-OLED displays in late 2020. At the end of last year, the transition to volume production was planned. However, Samsung has yet to reach 30 percent efficiency.

It is stated that the facilities have the capacity to produce 1 million QD-OLED TVs and monitor panels annually. However, for this, the efficiency must be at least 70 percent. In other words, volume production is not possible for now.

Every quarter, Samsung evaluates its investments by examining the reflection of a project on the consumer side. However, it was stated that there is not enough data in the market for QD-OLED and an evaluation will not be made this quarter.

On the other hand, it is stated that Samsung will wait for a while and will not expand its QD-OLED facilities. Instead, it is considered to switch to Quantum Dot Nanorod LED – QNED panels, which use oxide TFT and quantum dots.
