South Korean technology giant Samsung has released a commercial that is at the center of the reactions in Singapore. The commercial film, which was published, introduced the company’s smart watches and noise canceling headphones. Although everything has been normal up to this point, a scene in the movie that shows a Muslim mother supporting the drag queen(*) child in the movie created an uproar in the country.
Singapore is generally a conservative country. Also, LGBT actions are not widely accepted in Singapore. The commercial was also on the agenda because of the images of this mother and her child. A large segment in the country claimed that Samsung wanted to show that it is trying to support LGBT with this commercial. Taking action after comments such as “We are against the ideology of mainstreaming homosexuality and transgenderism in a conservative society,” Samsung had to remove the four-minute commercial.
Samsung: We removed the “insulting” video
Samsung made a statement from the Facebook account it opened for its customers in Singapore. In this statement, Samsung stated that the commercial film in question hurt some segments, and announced that the film was removed from all social media platforms. However, this explanation was not very satisfactory for Singaporeans. Because many people argued that Samsung is trying to bring LGBT into the mainstream, and this is unacceptable.
Although the video prepared by Samsung generally reacted, some Singaporeans sent support messages about the video. Focusing on the fact that no mother’s love for her child can be hurtful, users said that such a commercial is legal and that there is no problem in Samsung’s support of people who are excluded from society.
