Samsung, Galaxy Z Fold 5 is preparing to use a new hinge system. The South Korean tech giant is working to improve the overall quality of the devices, especially focusing on the durability of the hinge. Allegations suggest that the screens will be tested exponentially 200 thousand times.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold will be on the agenda with 5 hinges
According to the news of The Elec, Samsung is in the process of performing the durability test of the hinge to be used in the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The company will reportedly determine whether it can withstand the test by folding the new hinge 200,000 times. This is a remarkable increase over the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s limit.
The new hinge design is expected to offer several benefits, including better protection of the device’s screen against wear from constant folding. The Z Fold 5’s screens will line up when folded, and both screens will lean against each other, offering a smooth fold.
The current Z Fold 4 has a slight gap towards the hinge where the two screens don’t touch. The use of a “U-shaped” hinge on the Z Fold 4 is the main reason for the gap. The new hinge design is expected to eliminate this gap.
In addition to improved durability, the new hinge could make the Z Fold 5 much thinner. The Fold 4’s hinge is about 15.8mm thick, while the “waterdrop hinge” can be about 14mm thick.
There are also rumors that the hinge of the Galaxy Fold 5 can be folded 360 degrees. In recent months, Samsung Display has showcased a new “Flex In & Out” prototype that can enable the Z Fold 5 to fold in and out.
