Although AR and VR devices have been on the market for over a decade, Vision Pro, Apple’s first mixed reality title introduced a while ago, seems to give a strong impetus to this industry. With the expectation that more AR/VR headsets will be released in the future, Samsung will reportedly launch new sensors for such devices.

New 3D ToF sensors by Samsung

According to the statements, Samsung will introduce new 3D ToF sensors at the VLSI Symposium 2023 event this week. One of the sensors is said to have an on-chip ISP and has a 2-layer processing technology. The sensor is reported to have a 65nm BSI layer and a 28nm CMOS area. The 3D ToF sensor is said to be able to measure distances up to 5 meters at a frame rate of 60fps.

The sensor is reportedly a low-power chip, with power consumption as low as 188mW. If this information is correct, it could certainly be used in modern AR/VR headsets. As it is known, multiple such sensors are included in AR / VR headsets to measure nearby areas, objects and hand movements. The more sensitive these sensors measure, the better the experience.

It is stated that Samsung Electronics’ System LSI arm will produce and develop these sensors. This division of the company produces 5G modems for mobile devices, ISOCELL camera sensors for phones and smart cars. On the other hand, rumors have been circulating for a while that Samsung can also make a new mixed reality glasses called Galaxy XR. These new sensor news may indicate that. As it will be remembered, Samsung was developing mobile-oriented devices and applications with the Gear VR. By 2020, the firm had withdrawn from this area.
